CHAPTER SEVEN
MILES
âI brought the wine, Mrs. Morgan,â Miles said as he hugged her at the door.
She laughed and led him inside. âCall me Zara, how many times do I have to tell you that? Come on in you know you donât have to knock. Allen is already hereâ she said as she led him to the table.
Miles and Alex did that handshake back slap greeting guys did and then Miles shook Mr. Morganâs hand. As usual, dinner was full of laughter and embarrassing childhood stories about Allen and Avery, the absent daughter. Again, he noticed a little sadness when her name was mentioned, and they changed the subject quite quickly.
After dinner, while they were sitting in the living room, he decided to broach the subject of the missing daughter.
âHow is Avery now?â he asked.
Everyone was quiet for a little longer than a beat, and then Allen cleared his throat and said, âAs far as we know she and her five-year-old son are doing fine. In fact, we got some pictures of her son yesterday.â
Allen brought out his iPad and showed them a whole gallery of pictures of a cute little boy. Miles felt like he was intruding on a private moment and made to leave but the atmosphere lifted as they watched the pictures and videos.
âOur Avery is a beautiful girl, and you can see that beauty in her baby, I canât believe he is five years old.â Mrs. Morgan sighed. Allen and his father went into the kitchen to tackle the dinner dishes, leaving Miles with Mrs. Morgan to go through the gallery again.
He had no choice but to keep Mrs. Morgan company and listen to stories about Avery being a wild child with countless talents and spirit. She told how Avery had left town with a man her parents disapproved of and had never returned home, not even to visit. Miles felt himself getting angry at Avery. These people were amazing, why would she keep their grandson away from his grandparents for his whole life? Miles would never understand it. He didnât have a family growing up and he would have done anything to have people who cared about him. He would never turn his back on his family if he had one.
Miles and Allen head out at the same time. As they walked out Allen spoke.
âI begged her to come home. She said no,â Allen said quietly. Miles didnât need to ask who he was talking about. âSeeing them upset about not knowing their grandson really saddens me and she just doesnât seem to care.â
Miles heard the bitterness in his voice and remained quiet. What the Morgans needed was their daughter back and he didnât even know her, if there was a way to bring her and her son home, he would find it. Blake and Zara didnât deserve the sorrow he witnessed that evening.
Miles woke up at his usual five oâclock the next morning and headed out for his morning run. He got home just as Allen was getting into this rental car to head out.
